Abstract:

Leadership plays a vital role in running and developing an organization. Leadership can promote effectiveness and orientation, making leadership one of the oldest principles of organizing processes in evolution. While still holding this importance, leadership needs to be redefined toward our current reality in several ways. Recent approaches emphasize emerging organizational processes or even replacing hierarchy totally. However, for most people responsible for running an effective organization it is obvious that hierarchical leadership should not be replaced, but be combined with self-organization of people and emerging processes. Freedom, creativity and self-organizing is precious, but needs to be framed within a context and towards the purpose of an organization as well as the organizational culture the organization stands for. Such framing and building-up of an appropriate culture is the essential task of leadership.
